Year 1

Welcome to our Year 1 webpage.

Our year group consists of two classes and our teachers are Mrs Aram and Miss Kurucz.  To help us with our learning, we also have Mrs Smith, Mrs Anwar, Miss Cowley and on some days, we are lucky enough to have Miss Gawman too. They are our teaching assistants.

Each day is different and exciting! In the morning, we love to spend time reading and learning our spellings and phonics. We then have a Literacy lesson where we get the opportunity to apply all of our phonics skills.

After break, we have maths. Each day we learn our numbers, but our favourite lessons are when we get the chance to use practical resources to solve problems. There's nothing better than taking our learning outdoors.

We are lucky enough to have Miss Gawman to teach us Art. She is very creative - we hope we can be like her!

Did you know we have our own Forest School on site? We particularly enjoy our camp fires, roasting marshmallows and drinking hot chocolate. Sometimes you will find us climbing trees or whittling wood with our own knives!

We are very lucky in Year 1 to have music every Friday. In the Autumn term we will be learning how to play the Djembe drum. In Spring term, we will be putting on our Year 1 production with lots of wonderful singing. As we move on throughout the year we will be learning how to play the Gamelan.

In June, our Year 1 students will take part in the Phonics Screening Check. This is a short assessment where children will be asked to read 40 words—20 real words and 20 "alien" (nonsense) words. The screening check is a way for us to see how well the children are progressing with their phonics learning. This is something that parents and children do not need to worry about. The children will be given lots of practice throughout the year and forms apart of their phonics lessons. We will keep you updated on your child's phonics progress throughout the year. Later in the year, we’ll be hosting a parents' talk to go over the Phonics Screening Check in more detail. If you have any further questions, please speak to your class teacher or Miss Wood.

Our Forest School day is Monday.

Our PE day is a Wednesday.

Our library day is Thursday.

Please visit our subject pages to see the curriculum for each area of the curriculum.
